New York is leading the nation in the fight on global climate change, and the transition to a clean energy-powered economy. With the passage of the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act (Climate Act), New York has codified the most aggressive climate change program in the nation with goals to:
- Produce 70% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030
- Reach net zero emissions in the electricity sector by 2040
- Install 9 gigawatts of offshore wind by 2035
- Install 6 gigawatts of solar by 2025
- Install 6 gigawatts of energy storage by 2030
Additionally, the law creates the nation’s first Climate Action Council comprised of the leaders of various State agencies and authorities as well as legislative appointments to develop a plan outlining how New York will achieve an 85% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from 1990 levels by 2050 and eventually carbon neutrality in all sectors of the economy.
The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) is seeking a Social Media Manager to help develop and implement comprehensive and proactive social media strategies to build public awareness of NYSERDA’s initiatives, objectives and accomplishments as it supports New York's nation-leading Climate Act. The Social Media Manager will also help develop and implement campaigns to grow awareness to support NYSERDA’s objectives, programs and accomplishments by using social media platforms and other emerging technologies. The Social Media Manager will report to the Digital Content Editor.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Plan, develop and implement social media strategies and campaigns in line with NYSERDA’s overall objectives and specific communications and marketing strategies
- Manage and execute organic social media campaigns that integrate various social media platforms with a focus on Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook, and Instagram
- Provide relevant and compelling content including writing or developing media (short videos, Instagram stories, live tweets for events, and infographics) and maintaining a content/editorial calendar
- Routinely take technical topics and create concise content that resonates with followers, stakeholders, partners, and/or the press
- Track and evaluate social media metrics; monitor and report on relevant conversations around NYSERDA and energy industry
- Oversee social media monitoring, reporting and rapid response
- Analyze the effectiveness of current social media presence, content and campaigns and proactively make recommendations on the strategy going forward, particularly on growing and maintaining followers/engagement while increasing clicks to web pages and resources
- Provide guidance and support to executive management and program teams to advance social media best practices and thought leadership
- Work with executive management; Diversity, Equity & Inclusion leadership; other New York State agencies and authorities; and internal business units including Corporate Communications, Marketing, Events, IT, Community, and Government Affairs incorporating feedback from these and other stakeholders
- Attend events with the intent of developing photo, video and written social media content live/on-the-spot and for future use on social media and other channels
- Communicate clearly and professionally at all times with external and internal stakeholders
- Analyze prevailing and upcoming social media trends and platforms and provide insight on how to utilize these trends within the context of NYSERDA’s and New York State’s messaging on clean energy and climate change
- Perform other responsibilities as necessary
Minimum Qualifications:
- 5 years of professional experience in social media content development, management and/or analysis or some combination of marketing, communications and public relations experience that includes a strong and demonstrable focus on social media
- Excellent knowledge of and experience using Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, and strong familiarity with Tik Tok, Snapchat and other growing platforms
- Excellent digital, online and mobile media skills and a desire to keep up to date with trends and emerging social media technology
- Strong attention to detail, exceptional time management skills, ability to work collaboratively across multiple teams, excellent critical thinking skills, and experience effectively maneuvering shifting priorities and deadlines
- Familiarity with social media best practices, management, listening, and/or analytics tools (such as Twitter Analytics, TweetDeck, Facebook Insight, Sprout Social, Buffer, Hootsuite, or others) and how to use them to measure, provide actionable insights and improve performance
- Exceptional written and oral communications skills; ability to quickly and concisely edit and convert technical information to language non-experts would understand
- Excellent web and web research skill
Preferred Qualifications:
- Familiarity and interest in climate change, renewable energy, climate tech innovation, government, and/or clean energy finance and the policies around these issues
- Familiarity with online marketing best practices and demonstrable experience in web-based marketing and digital communications
- Familiarity with influencer marketing desired
- Familiarity with communications strategies and some practical experience in communications development
- Familiarity with creating videos or editing photos for use on social media
- Familiarity with Sprout Social
- Bachelor’s degree
