Job Overview

UpRoar Technologies is looking for an experienced and meticulous Head of Content Moderation to build and lead human and machine-based content moderation that foster unparalleled levels of trust between UpRoar, creators and users on our platform. You will be responsible for leading the Content Moderation division through the private Beta and then public launch of our GenZ-focused platform. You will provide leadership to set a multi-year vision and overall strategy to ensure that content on our platform builds an intimate and safe venue for a diverse range of creators and communities.

With trust and safety at the core of our efforts, the ideal executive will have expert knowledge of media, safety and regulatory challenges and sensitivities, as well as a passion for ethical technology and willingness to innovate in the social media space. You should have specific expertise in social platforms and an innate understanding of digitally native audiences. This role requires a strategic leader who can partner, collaborate and lead across departments – Product, Engineering, Legal, Business Development, Partnerships, etc. – on successful product adoption programs.

Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, successful candidates will enjoy building things and challenging the status quo. This person should be comfortable working with senior leadership and C-suite executives in a fast-paced and often-ambiguous environment. You should have a genuine fascination for social media, and a commitment to affecting global change.

The Head of Content Moderation will be at the forefront of maintaining a welcoming and safe place for users to build inclusive communities that enable diverse creators to flourish. This person will have a bias for action and keep a cool head in crises, while possessing a creative curiosity and eagerness to build.

We are open to this person working remotely from anywhere in the United States.

Stuff You’ll Work On

  • Set a multi-year vision and strategy for our content moderation team to ensure that content on UpRoar falls within our community guidelines
  • Develop and review our community policies to promote a positive and safe environment for all of our users and creators to enjoy and express themselves
  • Hire leaders and build a world-class team that exemplifies empathy, clarity, and delivers outstanding results
  • Ensure every touchpoint with the content moderation team and infrastructure is in line with our creator- and user-first values
  • Blend technical solutions with human interaction to ensure interactions with creators are efficient, helpful, and uniquely delightful
  • Maintain a commitment to keep our online community safe, and lead human and machine-based moderation to remove harmful content quickly and often before it reaches our general community
  • Develop and enforce content standards and policies, implement content review processes, tools and education/best practices, and scalability plans in alignment with the vision and roadmap as well as UpRoar’s moderation standards
  • Establish operational excellence in our decision-making and user-facing communication processes
  • Be willing and able to work with sensitive issues and content
  • Drive strategic process improvements (e.g., improved standardization of documentation, tooling, cross-functional collaboration and communication)
  • Inspire, motivate, and project manage cross functional teams, including Product, Engineering, Legal, Policy, etc.
  • Build processes to review, validate, and provide estimated precision rates for proposed controls and machine learning models
  • Respond to emergent risks to our community safeguards, avoid potential risks, and guide implementation of solutions

Stuff You’ve Done

  • Undergraduate degree (MBA, JD or LLM preferred), equivalent work experience, or an equally compelling collection of non-academic life experiences
  • 10+ years in a Content Moderation role and extensive experience with mobile platforms and apps, preferably social media platforms
  • Demonstrated success in planning and implementing human- and machine-based content moderation systems and policies
  • Relevant work experience in Trust & Safety, Content Moderation, Risk, Policy or Legal within the social media or technology industries
  • You are curious with an intense desire to learn and explore
  • Experience making tough decisions based on complex information and difficult tradeoffs
  • A team player who is willing to get their hands dirty and where no type of work is “beneath” you
  • Highly attentive to detail, with ability to accurately analyze lengthy legal documents
  • Experience designing technology roadmaps
  • You ask incisive questions that uncover the heart of an issue, and frame data so that it effectively conveys the right takeaways
  • Experience leading a Trust and Safety team for multiple years, and have scaled with a company
  • You are prepared to build and lead a team that contributes to a culture of high performance and unusual compassion
  • Deep understanding of the technological tools and software in the space to help scale operations and get the job done
  • Proven success running company-wide initiatives across multiple departments
  • Clear and effective communicator, and comfortable engaging and debating an executive team
  • Knowledge of media, safety, and regulatory challenges and sensitivities
  • Proficiency with SQL, Looker, Tableau, as well as statistics metrics such as precision, recall, and false positive rates, or other data transformation/analytics techniques and business intelligence tools

  • Base Salary: $135,000 - $175,000. At UpRoar, base pay is one part of our total compensation package. This is the pay range the Company believes it will pay for this position at the time of this posting. Consistent with applicable law, compensation will be determined based on your skills, qualifications and experience.
