Head of Marketing and eCommerce
Summary
Based at the Portland, OR headquarters, the Head of Marketing and eCommerce is responsible for leading a cohesive and uniquely-Stumptown brand and marketing strategy to drive awareness, profitable sales growth and customer acquisition across our omni-channel business. Marketing plans for the brand will include paid and organic social media, PR, SEO/SEM, promotions, partnerships and creative plans and activations in support of our Retail Cafes, Wholesale, e-Commerce and CPG business channels. Additionally, this role has full ownership, including P&L responsibility, for our growing and profitable eCommerce business.
This position will work in a highly collaborative environment across the business and will require an artful blend of quantitative, data-driven decision making with intuition, humor and a healthy irreverence for tradition and ‘the norm’. The ideal person for this role will be strategic, energized by developing big ideas and a coach willing to roll up their sleeves to work side-by-side with their team and the executive leadership team. This is an exciting opportunity for an individual to further grow Stumptown’s leadership position within the super premium coffee industry.
Essential Functions
- Brand Leadership
- Serve as a passionate advocate and guardian of Stumptown brand equity.
- Develop and execute the brand positioning, ensuring the brand stays true to its rich heritage and super premium position, while remaining relevant and continuing to evolve.
- Marketing Strategy & Planning
- Lead the marketing strategy, consumer insights and marketing plan initiatives for the Stumptown brand. Work cross-functionally to present a cohesive and compelling brand experience to our target consumer that drives awareness, engagement, acquisition, traffic and sales for the brand.
- Build out an integrated marketing plan calendar leveraging the following: consumer and cross channel insights, digital platforms, promotion, website, PR and creative content development and storytelling.
- Build compelling business cases with attractive ROI that support Stumptown financial goals.
- Consumer Communications including PR and Social Media
- Oversee all consumer communications across all channels.
- Drive brand social media marketing and community growth and oversee influencer outreach and content syndication strategies.
- Serve as a steward and champion to guide Stumptown’s social impact, leveraging our existing B Corp certification and developing strategy and partnerships to engage our employees, customers and community through positive social change.
- Strategic Partnerships
- Enhance existing partnerships and lead the identification and execution of additional partnership opportunities consistent with the Stumptown brand that can drive greater brand awareness and traffic.
- Consumer Insights
- Help increase integration of the voice of the consumer and customer into the business. Initiate consumer research as needed and leverage all available 3rd party research.
- Track critical brand KPIs along with industry and competitive activity.
- Grow eCommerce Revenue and Profit
- Lead the overall customer experience on Stumptowncoffee.com to grow traffic, site conversion and retention.
- Develop traffic driving plans to improve ROI of digital marketing and implement site conversion improvements leveraging resources collaboratively with sister companies.
- Product Innovation
- Lead all product roll outs along with new formats and innovation across coffee beans and cold brew. Collaborate with channel leaders to maximize sales.
- Develop business plans for new product formats including volume forecasts, pricing, product costs, margin and launch plans. Track and measure results.
- Team Leadership & Development
- Thoughtfully lead, build and inspire a team of passionate marketers and brand creators
- As a member of the Leadership Team, provide organizational leadership to highlight employees internally and engage them in connecting with our band.
Supervisory responsibilities
- This position manages a team of marketing, creative and product professionals as well as external agency relationships.
- There is also a dedicated eCommerce team of 2 people.
Qualifications
- 10+ years of brand management or marketing experience in CPG or Retail including 5+ years experience managing a P&L. Beverage or coffee experience a plus
- Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Business or a related field; MBA a plus
- A strong commercial mindset and ability to drive business results through development and execution of brand marketing strategy and content.
- Proven track record in running a successful ecommerce business with significant year over year growth
- Demonstrated analytical, creative, collaborative and strategic thinking to deliver breakthrough and measurable brand-building ideas.
- Experience building digital strategies and campaigns including SEO & SEM that deliver against traffic, conversion and average check goals.
- Expert ability to think strategically and execute tactically while leveraging scrappy budgets.
- Experience managing creative teams as well as external agencies.
- Demonstrated knowledge of cultural zeitgeist, current and future trends, social scenes, emerging talent and platforms to keep our brand relevant, relatable and aspirational with consumers.
- Possesses exceptional communication skills, with the ability to interact with all levels of people within and outside of the organization.
- Possesses strong business and operational acumen; with the ability to balance conflicting needs and timelines of multiple stakeholders.
- Ability to operate strategically, but also to flex into operational and tactical work when needed.
Work Environment and Physical Demands
- Work takes place in office settings; this position is based at our HQ in Portland, Oregon and will spend, on average, half of their time working in the office and half of their time working from home.

- Carry weight, lift – lift up to 5 pounds frequently and up to 50 pounds occasionally
- Travel – occasional travel up to 25%
