Sr. Communications & Marketing Strategist
The Institute for Policy Solutions at the Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing seeks a proactive, skilled Sr. Communications & Marketing Strategist to support the Director Communications & Marketing in driving engagement and awareness to advance the Institute’s goals of redesigning U.S. health and health care and eliminating health inequities through the development and promotion of evidence-based, nurse-driven models of care, while elevating the perception of nurses in media as skilled experts in development of effective health policy.
Reporting to the Director Communications & Marketing, the Senior Communications & Marketing Strategist will play a crucial part in the development, implementation, and refinement of a comprehensive communications and marketing plan — including execution of effective strategies; development and analysis of quality content, events, and promotions; and fostering of productive outreach and relationships with media, policymakers, and partners to further Institute objectives.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
- Advise on strategies to develop effective marketing and communications plans, key messaging, and campaigns executed across a wide range of integrated content methods, channels, and platforms.
- Support the planning, development, and dissemination of news, announcements, and public information related to the Institute.
- Draft energizing and effective talking points and scripts for the IPS Executive Director, spokespersons, event speakers, videos, and key meetings, remarks, and presentations.
- Ideate and create goal-oriented and impactful promotional multimedia content, storytelling, messaging, and presentations to drive engagement with targeted audiences.
- Support the development and maintenance of media and influencer contact lists, identify key opportunities, and assist in the coordination of media and partner relations activities.
- Utilize appropriate resources to develop and strengthen relationships with key media, policy, and healthcare leaders and influencers at local, state, and national levels to strengthen Institute partnerships and collaborations.
- Assist in the strategic planning, promotion, execution, and follow-up of Institute-sponsored events that grow engagement, communicate solutions, and increase support for the Institute.
- Apply an expert level of quality control and editing skills for all marketing and communications projects, initiatives, and operations.
- Support the development, execution, and analysis of communications and marketing operations to identify, target, and track engagement journeys for key audiences, partners, and potential collaborators.
- Advise on development and execution of collaborative marketing and communications projects involving Institute contributors, vendors, and partners.
- Serve as an impassioned representative for the Institute with a deep and clear understanding of its values and goals, the causes and harmful impacts of health inequities and flawed models of care and delivery, the urgency of a need for health system redesign, the key potential for nurses as expert leaders of this change, and the power of policy in achieving structural and systemic change.
Additional Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Excellent writing and editing skills for a range of communications styles and audiences.
- Current and historical knowledge of evolving health policy and legislative landscapes for identifying key opportunities for Institute communications and media relations projects.
- Understanding of past, present, and future challenges facing U.S. health care and the impact of health inequities, harmful social determinants of health and systemic racism on health outcomes in communities of people experiencing marginalization.
- Understanding of the various causes and effects of poverty in a diverse range of communities and populations throughout the United States.
- Understanding of the qualities of the nursing profession and the unique role nurses can play in effectively addressing a range of U.S. health challenges. Understanding of the structures of U.S. state and federal governments, complex legislative and judicial processes, the work of government agencies related to public health, safety, and welfare, and the role of advocacy organizations in these processes.
- Ability to comprehend and communicate the goals, hypotheses, processes and outcomes of community interventions, research, and perspectives.
- Ability to handle sensitive information and maintain appropriate confidentiality.
- Ability to work quickly on deadline, while balancing competing priorities.
- Judgment to make sound decisions without supervision.
- Ability to translate information quickly and accurately using words or visuals.
- Strong attention to detail.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in related field.
- Four years related experience.
- Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience developing strategic communications plans in healthcare or academic settings.
- Experience working closely with organizational leaders in nonprofit, media, healthcare, and academic settings.
- Experience with a wide range of content development, social media, website management, and marketing and public relations platforms.
- Experience in media relations and understanding of print, broadcast, and online media general practices.

The referenced base salary range represents the low and high end of Johns Hopkins University’s salary range for this position. Not all candidates will be eligible for the upper end of the salary range. Exact salary will ultimately depend on multiple factors, which may include the successful candidate's geographic location, skills, work experience, market conditions, education/training and other qualifications. If permitted, equivalencies will follow these guidelines: JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.
