Audience Manager

Job Level: Manager, Content

Minimum Salary: $90,000.00

USA TODAY’s Audience team is looking for an energetic audience manager to assist in directing USA TODAY's award-winning coverage across digital platforms. This audience manager will move at the speed of news in a 24/7 newsroom, working with section editors and content leaders on coverage needs while coordinating fast-paced work within the Audience team. The candidate must demonstrate strong news judgment and have prior digital news experience. S/he will specialize in finding a wide audience for USA TODAY’s stories, photos, videos, graphics and other content, and optimizing them for different social and digital platforms. This candidate will be a critical part of growing talent and skills among the audience team, working with direct reports and other team members to create eye-catching social graphics, top-notch alerts, conversational social copy, unique newsletter subject lines and more.

We are looking for someone who is comfortable diving into breaking news and directing a team of audience editors to alert, socialize, and grow audiences across platforms for the nation's biggest breaking news stories.

The audience manager will assist with planning for morning coverage, including prioritizing assignments and ensuring audience plans are created, edited and ready to launch as news warrants. The editor will also work on mobile/desktop programming, will write/edit daily, do additional content creation and manage digital platforms in real time as news and needs warrant.

This remote role will have a Sunday through Thursday shift.

  • Can manage coverage in fluid, fast-breaking, stressful situations with sound news judgment.
  • Be able to meet deadlines and prioritize competing demands.
  • Has a passion for audience growth, social media and finding new ways to reach readers.
  • Is an eagle-eyed copy editor with a background in editing and writing.
  • Will participate in news meetings to stay informed about coverage plans.
  • Has the ability and willingness to work on weekends and nights as part of a 24/7 newsroom.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's or master’s degree in journalism or any other subject or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Five years of newsroom experience, including one year of supervisory or management experience
  • An understanding of project management practices to organize a robust audience portfolio.
  • Impeccable news judgment and ability to react quickly to real-time breaking coverage.
  • Experience working on deadline for a major news outlet.
  • A collaborative spirit and explanatory attitude that encourages everyone in the newsroom to work together toward audience outreach.
  • Knowledge of major audience platforms, including sending alerts, managing a home page, social platforms like Facebook, TikTok, X, Threads, Instagram and LinkedIn, best practices and functions, and how people consume information there.
  • A curiosity in how people use digital platforms for news in a fast-evolving media ecosystem.
  • Expert knowledge of social platform analytics, where to find them and how to collect them and analyze them.
