Social Media Specialist
Job Summary
Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution is currently searching for a Social Media Specialist to join the Communications Department. This is a temporary, casual, non-exempt position, and is eligible for casual benefits. This position will be less than 20 hours a week through 12/31/2021 with the the potential to extend into 2022 as determined by funding availability.

Essential Functions
The Social Media Specialist will report to the Associate Marketing Director and work collaboratively to increase brand awareness and engagement across WHOI’s social media channels through content development and planning, responding and acting efficiently on the latest social media trends, and providing metrics and insights on social media behavior that could improve future social media and marketing initiatives.
Other responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Create engaging copy, imagery, and video content
- Research audience preferences and discover current trends
- Design posts to sustain readers’ curiosity and create buzz around ocean science topics
- Measure web traffic and monitor SEO
- Stay up to date with changes in all social platforms ensuring maximum effectiveness
- Train co-workers to use social media in a cohesive and beneficial way
- Facilitate online conversations with audiences and monitor and respond to queries
- Report on online feedback from followers
- Develop an optimal posting schedule, considering web traffic and customer engagement metrics
- Suggest new ways to attract prospective customers, like promotions and competitions
NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Perform other functions as deemed necessary by supervisor
- May be asked to work nights or weekends to staff events or live productions
Education & Experience
Education:
- BS degree in Marketing, Communications, Science, or experience in Science Communications is required
- A minimum of two (2) years related experience is required
Experience:
- Proven work experience as a Social Media Coordinator
- Expertise in multiple social media platforms (like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat, and Reddit)
- Has experience with science writing or working for a research organization
- Experience using social media automation tools like Agora Pulse and Later.com
- Has intermediate knowledge of Canva or design applications like Adobe InDesign
- In-depth knowledge of SEO, keyword research and Google Analytics
- Ability to deliver creative content (copy, image and video)
- Ability to grasp future trends in digital technologies and act proactively
- Must have strong skills in multi-tasking, organization, project management, scheduling, and written and verbal communication
- Must be able to work independently
- Must be comfortable working cross-functionally with all personality types and perspectives with the ability to voice concerns or express opinions in a professional manner
- Ability to stay level-headed, has passion for social media and ocean sciences
- Thrive in a fast-paced environment with shifting priorities.
Desired
- Familiarity with online marketing strategies and marketing channels like paid advertising and basic digital event marketing
- Experience with supporting influencer marketing to amplify social media and brands
- Can work on-site periodically, but position can be mostly remote
