Job Description Summary

The Los Angeles Times and San Diego Union-Tribune are looking for a strategic Director of Media who can lead an external agency and internal team of performance marketers to achieve subscriber growth and acquisition goals using paid media.

The Director of Media will be responsible for setting and adjusting the strategy for the agency and internal teams to hit the growth and retention goals, tracking progress against goals and proactively guiding the team to make optimizations in real-time. In addition, the Director of Media will help accelerate subscriber growth through the aggressive testing and optimization of new channels and platforms (paid social, search, influencer, affiliate, etc.), with a “fail fast” and “always be testing” mentality.

In this role, you will partner closely with Marketing Operations, Product, Data Analytics, Data Science, and Creative teams. You’ll continuously measure campaign performance and share actionable insights from paid media campaigns – with a focus on business outcomes achieved and learnings from testing, that inform the next tests.

To be successful in this role, you’re likely a data-driven individual who’s passionate about deriving insights from various data sources and packaging up those insights in an outcome-oriented manner that can be shared cross departmentally.

This role will reside on the Consumer Marketing team.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the internal performance marketing and trade media teams to achieve subscriber growth and retention goals.
  • Lead external media agency to achieve acquisition and retention goals – creating and adjusting forecasts for the year in real-time.
  • Manage internal cross-departmental partnerships with Data, Product and Creative teams to ensure media plans can be tracked, optimized in real-time with trusted data and creative messaging/design are constantly being tested against different audiences and platforms – in service of business goals.
  • Champion paid media attribution process/workflow with internal Data team and external agency to ensure proper attribution can be assigned to subscriptions driven by paid media.
  • Continuously identify new platforms and channels to test/learn from to accelerate subscriber growth.
  • Report, track, and optimize all media KPIs/campaign performance and provide regular updates to the rest of the team.

Qualifications

  • 8+ years’ experience in Digital Media at an advertising agency, or in-house marketing department working on subscription-based products or ecommerce.
  • 8+ years Paid Social, Paid Search, Programmatic experience at an advertising agency, or in-house marketing department working on subscription-based products or ecommerce.
  • 6+ years’ experience leading strategic media planning and forecasting the business impact of the media plans.
  • 4+ years managing a team of direct reports.
  • Mastery of best practices of Paid Social and Paid Search.
  • In-depth understanding of publishing tools, analytics tools, bid management and social media technology as well as all native platforms (YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Google, etc.).
  • Self-starter who excels in multi-tasking, prioritization and working effectively under pressure and tight deadlines.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Must be a team player with a results-oriented focused.
  • Experience with influencer marketing a nice to have, but not required.

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience preferred
