Job Summary

The Junior Designer is a visual and creative strategist for the Southwest Key Programs Communications Department and works under the supervision of the Senior Designer to provide design and marketing creative for the many programs, departments and initiatives of the organization. The chief responsibility of the Junior Designer is to produce innovative, culturally appropriate, and intuitive creative content for our marketing campaigns, communications, and branding initiatives. This entails following established brand guidelines, refining creative briefs, and delivering innovative creative that achieves the measurable goals of both our internal clients and direct team. This high-volume, fast paced position requires an adaptive working style and the ability to juggle multiple projects at once while delivering strategic, targeted and quality designs. The Junior Designer must be an adaptable and resourceful self-starter, capable of designing in web and UX, print, email, video and social platforms.

Essential Functions

  • Provides key creative support within the Communications Department for internal and external communications campaigns as well as brand development and brand extension.
  • Provides innovative content strategies that coordinate with the work of other team members.
  • Works closely with the P roduction Coordinator to manage timelines and departmental capacity.
  • Designs intuitively to effectively communicate information hierarchies through strong typographic, experiential and graphic application.
  • Proofs and edits projects to spec and strategizes best practice for design and content goals.
  • Follows creative briefs and is able to validate design decisions based on briefs. Able to receive feedback while effectively communicating design strategies.
  • Able to juggle multiple projects on tight timelines. Team-player, able to effectively communicate production requirements, timing estimates, and bandwidth limitations.
  • Uses Asana for project collaborations and proof tracking. Uses Adobe CC and Libraries to produce designs.
  • Exceptional typographic and digital retouching skills with an expert knowledge of the core Adobe suite: Acrobat, Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop, After Effects, and Premier.
  • Deep understanding of UX/UI and WordPress, and basic coding knowledge in CSS and HTML.
  • Provides innovative and measurable design solutions to achieve client and department goals.
  • Provides excellent customer services to stakeholders and internal clients
  • Basic knowledge of print production and coordination.
  • Maintains understanding of all programs and services offered by Southwest Key Programs
  • Demonstrates in-depth knowledge of commonly used design concepts, practices, and procedures and a history of successful work with communications professionals and their clients.
  • Willingness to perform any other duties as assigned.

Qualifications And Requirements

Educational Requirements

  • Bachelors or higher degree in marketing, communications, applied arts, visual communications, advertising, or related field

Required Skills

  • 3 to 7 years of demonstrated graphic design, advertising, marketing, and branding experience
  • Excellent design skills in core adobe products: Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, Acrobat, After Effects and Adobe Premier
  • Strong foundational knowledge of web, UX design, and coding languages including CSS and HTML5.
  • Foundational video editing skills in Premier
  • Technically resourceful and able to troubleshoot technical challenges autonomously
  • Ability to follow a pre-established design direction and extend the direction across multiple mediums to spec.
  • Detail oriented with deep knowledge of design production principles, methods and techniques
  • Strong grasp of technical requirements and design capacity and limitations within a platform
  • Experience managing production files in a team environment and collaborating using Adobe Libraries
  • Strong collaboration skills and ability to co-create campaigns within design parameters.

  • Experience organizing design files and digital assets; familiarity with organizing and linking shared files
  • Ability to manage numerous small to medium creative projects simultaneously as opposed to working on a single, long-term project

Preferred Skills

  • Experience with project management application: Asana.
  • Experience designing in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Sharepoint.
  • Non-profit experience
  • Experience designing high volume Social Media Marketing and Influencer Marketing
  • Understanding of print production requirements
  • Experience with animation in photoshop and Adobe After Effects
  • Experience designing HubSpot websites, email coding, and landing pages
  • Fluent English and Spanish (written and spoken) desired.

Physical Demands

Must be able to read, write, and communicate both verbally and in written form to express and exchange ideas. Must be able to type. While performing the responsibilities of this job, the employee must be able to access all components of workstation and other office equipment. Frequent typing, writing, bending and twisting. Must be able to lift up to 30 pounds.

Work Environment

General office environment with moderate noise. This position is mostly sedentary, involves sitting most of the time, but may involve walking or standing for brief periods of time. A busy environment with many unscheduled interruptions. Frequent computer usage at workstation for extended periods of time. Public contact position requiring appropriate business apparel. During Covid-19 quarantines, this position requires a professional remote environment and professional video presentation.
