The Boston Public Library has impacted the lives of countless individuals in its 170-plus year history. We are seeking a creative, dedicated digital storyteller to help us tell those stories, and to re-introduce our community to all the BPL has to offer.

Brief Job Description

While the focus of the Digital Content Creator/Manager will be on social media, we would expect that many of the campaigns created would be appropriate to highlight on our web site and in our newsletters as well.

The Digital Content Creator/Manager should have a deep understanding of key social media platforms and how to create engaging content tailored to each one. Working collaboratively with the Chief of Communications & Strategy, the Senior Public Relations Associate, and the Senior Marketing Associate, this position will be responsible for creating BPL’s social media strategy and content, ensuring that it is aligned with the BPL’s priorities, and enables us to connect more closely with the BPL’s wide range of audiences.

Responsibilities

Scope of Responsibility

  • Creates consistent, engaging, meaningful content on all social media platforms. Generates, edits, publishes, and shares daily content using original text, images, and video that builds meaningful connections and encourages community members to take action.
  • Develops and executes on social media content plans and calendars that are aligned with the BPL’s priorities and brand identity.
  • Builds and executes a social media strategy through competitive research, platform determination, benchmarking, messaging, and audience identification.
  • Identifies and surface BPL’s untold impact stories.
  • Collaborates across all departments and branches of the BPL to identify and surface those stories that best reflect BPL’s priorities.
  • Communicates with social media followers, including responding to queries in a timely manner.
  • Where appropriate, develops and manages social influencer programs.
  • Defines most important social media key performance indicators. Continuously improves by capturing and analyzing the appropriate social data/metrics, insights and best practices, and acting on the information, using analytical tools such as Google Analytics, Hootsuite, and Facebook Insight.
  • Prepares weekly reports on social media marketing efforts.
  • Develops recommendations to adjust the social media marketing strategy for optimal results.
  • Stays up to date on best practices and emerging trends in social media.
  • Builds, maintains, and manages marketing’s suite of digital assets, i.e. stock photos, video clips, graphics, etc.
  • Ensures compliance with BPL brand standards across all digital channels.
  • Performs other related and comparable duties as assigned.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications

Education – Bachelor’s degree from a recognized college or university in journalism, communications, marketing, or a related field. Relevant subject knowledge and/or specialized training required. In exceptional instances specialized education, training and/or experience may be substituted for part or all of the educational requirements.

Experience – Three (3) or more years of appropriate professional experience in social media, including planning, creating, and managing content, or any equivalent combination of education, experience and training sufficient to indicate ability to do the work. Advertising or PR agency experience is a plus. Experience using various analytics software. Ability to exercise good judgement and focus on detail as required by the job.

Proficiency in a second language other than English desirable.

Requirements

  • Ability to travel to BPL branches and to other off-site locations across the system, as assigned.
  • Residency – Must be a resident of the City of Boston upon the first day of hire.
  • CORI – Must successfully clear a Criminal Offenders Record Information check with the City of Boston.
  • This position will require a writing test.
