The Public Health Influencer conducts community public health education, client engagement, and outreach activities as it relates to increasing community and individual awareness about HIV/STI prevention, diagnosis, and treatment including knowledge about testing, safer sex practices, substance use, and PrEP and PEP. Center for Health Justice (CHJ) is seeking an individual for our public health education programs which provides justice involved men who have sex with men (MSM) and LGBTQ people with knowledge and support in dealing with the unique challenges faced by the this underserved population.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

  • Assist in the development and implementation of a public health education program targeting justice involved MSM and LGBTQ people in Los Angeles County correctional facilities.
  • Create an organized program workflow (calendars and scheduling) including daily contact with target population in correctional facilities through classes and psychosocial support groups.
  • Assist clients with linkages to essential services including HIV/STI testing, PrEP and PEP, treatment, housing, and employment.
  • Utilize social media platforms in outreach efforts including Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat, and Twitter.
  • Assist in the development, design and layout of social marketing materials supporting program activities.
  • Ensure culturally and linguistically appropriate services.
  • Manage data and participate in evaluation reports as assigned.
  • Attend community/public meetings as necessary.
  • Aggressive tactics to conduct follow-ups with clients in the community.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in public health or health and human services related field and experience working in the HIV/health education field and experience working with men who have sex with men (MSM) and/or LGBTQ people.

Knowledge Of

  • Health and social concerns of diverse populations of gay/non-gay identified MSM;
  • Underserved populations impacted by the HIV Epidemic;
  • Risk-factors and high risk settings for HIV transmission and acquisition including: social “hook-up” apps, bathhouses, sex clubs, and cruising locations;
  • Health disparities related to HIV and STIs;
  • Harm-reduction and risk reduction theory;
  • Motivational interviewing techniques;
  • Human sexuality;
  • Substance use and abuse;
  • Mental health and co-occurring disorders
  • Outreach and community engagement strategies using principles of social marketing;
  • Data management and basic evaluation methods; and
  • Organizations and venues where our target population frequents.

Ability To

  • Work independently;
  • Work with diverse staff, volunteers and professionals;
  • Work with diverse community stakeholders with differing knowledge of risk for HIV infection;
  • Engage in community building activities and establish partnerships with stakeholders;
  • Work comfortably in a rapidly changing environment;
  • Apply skills to address social inequities experienced by diverse minority groups; and
  • Link participants to essential services in the greater Los Angeles County region.

Other Requirements

  • A valid California driver’s license and reliable transportation or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions;
  • Successful Clearance of LA County Sheriff’s Department Live Scan and Background Process to gain access to correctional facilities; and
  • Medical clearance may be required, including tuberculosis testing.

Additional Considerations

  • The individual will be required to conduct some work in Los Angeles County Jails and local State Prisons.
  • Formerly incarcerated applicants welcomed, however the person hired must be able to clear to work inside locked facilities.
  • Experience working within locked facilities and with vulnerable or under-served, population is recommended but not required.

Member of LGBTQ+ is preferred.

About Center For Health Justice

CHJ serves people impacted by incarceration, providing health education and assisting its clients with reintegrating back into the community after release from correctional custody. This includes coordinating access to quality medical care, essential support services, skill building activities, and extracurricular activities. CHJ conducts work inside and outside correctional facilities in Los Angeles County and provides services primarily for LGBTQ+ individuals and those belonging to racial/ethnic minority groups.
